Description:

Hammy / Male / 1.5 years old / 53 pounds / Lab Mix / Good with Dogs with Proper Introductions / Good with Cats / Good with Kids Aged 10+ / From Tennessee / Fostered in Toronto ** Follow Hammy’s adventures on Instagram:@twoqueersandafosterdog ** Meet Hammy! Poor Hammy was surrendered to the pound in Tennessee when his owner could no longer care for him. He has since made the journey to Toronto to find his forever home. Hammy is described by his fosters as sweet, gentle, goofy, and silly. He loves going for walks, sniffing, playing with his stuffies, shredding paper (and toys!), playing fetch, chewing bully sticks, snuggling, and napping. There is not much this happy-go-lucky guy does not like! He currently lives with two cats and enjoys trying to get them to play with him. After all this, he likes to sprawl out in bed with his fosters and sleep quietly through the night. Hammy is very sweet and affectionate with the people he knows. He loves to brush up on you for pets and will follow you around waiting for your attention. He is generally very curious about new people and eager to please them. He appreciates a slow approach and does not like when anyone reaches over his head for pets so it is important to advocate for him and protect his space. Hammy has met kids over 10 years old and done well with them. He would do well with older, respectful, dog-savvy children who can respect his boundaries. He can get overstimulated and may jump up. He seems interested in kids when out on walks and would likely be gentle and kind to children. Hammy gets three 30-minute walks a day, plus some pee breaks. He also gets indoor enrichment like puzzle toys and bully sticks. Hammy can pull on leash when he gets excited but is working with his foster on loose leash walking. He seems comfortable outside and doesn’t react too much to anything he comes across (except the odd very loud noise). He can sometimes be overeager to meet new people or dogs but his fosters are working on this and practicing “engage/disengage”. Hammy is very good in the house. He is not crated and has been left for up to 2 hours on his own and is slowly increasing that time. He can take a bit to settle but will eventually lie down and rest while his fosters are out. He has tried to chew things he shouldn’t when he is in a playful mood but is easily redirected. He likes to nap during the day and sleeps through the night in bed with his fosters. Hammy is very dog-social and loves playing with other dogs on the farm in Tennessee. Since coming into foster care he has not interacted with any dogs yet. When he sees other dogs on leash he tends to jump up and pull towards them. He wants to engage but needs to learn proper manners and a calmer approach. He would do great in a home with other dogs who are respectful of his boundaries. He would require proper introductions before meeting any new dogs. He currently lives with two cats and is curious and playful with them but mostly leaves them alone. Hammy is working on basic obedience but his current training mostly focuses on loose leash walking and getting his attention while out on walks. He is working on polite greetings and leash walking. Hammy is potty trained. Hammy’s perfect forever family would be patient and have time to focus on his training. He needs a family that can provide lots of walks, adventures, and hikes, as well as enrichment. He would do best in a family that is knowledgeable about canine body language. He would do best in a home with a yard where he can get some zoomies out and would prefer to be in a quieter area rather than right downtown. Hammy is a total sweetie and a joy to be around. He is silly and goofy and has a heart of gold. He is eager to please and just wants love. His future family will be very lucky to get him. Hammy has undergone treatment for heartworm. He does not require much in the way of special care but he will need to stay on a heartworm prevention until he has had two negative heartworm tests at least six months apart. Fetch + Releash will cover the cost of the heartworm prevention for the first six months as well as the follow-up heartworm test(s), provided they are done at our partner vet clinic. The adoptive family will then be responsible for covering the cost of the next six months of the heartworm prevention medicine.
