Adopt Skye a Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed dog in Kitchener, ON (38148540)

Location:
Kitchener, ON
Description:

Skye (M) is a 2yo Lab X. He is currently living with his foster mom solo in a detached house - what a lucky boy! Skye is house trained and working on his crate training. Skye still needs lots of encouragement to go into his crate, however once he is in there he is relaxed, quiet as a mouse and likes to nap or play with his toys. Skye came from a remote northern community where he lived outdoors and had no previous training, so he still needs some guidance on what not to chew and to be calm in the house. He loves attention and always wants to be touching his people, but is still learning to relax out of the crate. Skye is currently doing well being leashed when in the house outside his crate for easy redirection if he chews on something he shouldn't - like his leash! Skye loves all people, although sometimes he can show too much love by showing rude puppy behaviours like jumping up when he meets new people. He adores his foster mom and likes to follow her around the house. Not in an unhealthy clingy way, but in a relaxed wants-to-be-with-his-people way. Skye hasn't met any kids, but seems happy with every new human he meets in the neighbourhood. His future furever home will need to be prepared to correct some of his ruder happy behaviours, and encourage calm greetings. Skye is amicable with the other dogs he meets, but can be easily excited. He was able to calmly coexist with the dogs in his intake home, and has done a group class with other dogs where he learned to calmly walk past them with some distraction, however his leash skills still need a lot of work in a normal outdoor environment. Skye can get distracted when seeing other dogs on walks and gets overstimulated and can fixate. He is learning to focus on his foster mom for a more enjoyable walk for everybody. He is making progress in his foster home, but his furever home should be prepared to continue working with him. Skye has not been tested with cats, but does have a very strong prey drive with small animals, and we feel like he may not do well with cats. His prey drive is so strong that sometimes he gets distracted and forgets why he's outside for pee breaks! Since attending training class, Skye has been making amazing progress and has been settling into a loose leash walk, but will need a furever family that can continue working on his leash skills to keep up all the good work his foster mom is putting in. Skye had no previous training before coming into rescue, but has learned sit, down and to play fetch! He really enjoys fetch the most when he gets treats to return the ball - treats > toys, am I right? Skye is very gentle taking food by hand. Skye enjoys car rides and brushing, he's a pretty happy boy with his people! His favorite part of the day is his morning cuddles with foster mom before he goes to work. Skye is a big bundle of love with the softest fur. He can be timid at first in new environments but is willing to follow his person in new situations. He responds so well to verbal corrections and enjoys being around people. He has taken to training very quickly and has a great food drive. We are practicing independent time like crate time and time on a dog bed and he is doing so well at settling and relaxing in the newer environment. Here is what Skye's foster mom has to say about him: "Skye is such a sweet, goofy, gentle boy! He's just like a curious toddler who needs to be guided and taught--without the 'terrible twos' of a human toddler though ;) Continued training will help to make Skye an amazing pet--not that he isn't amazing already! He has learned quickly that the kitchen is off limits as well as the bedrooms, gentle reminders still needed. He likes to play fetch with a tennis ball or one of his rubber toys in the basement as long as the food holds out. He pounces on his toy or ball just like a playful puppy. When the treats run out then the toy gets dumped in the sewing room-I haven't figured out why that room??? Skye likes to be in close proximity but he's not clingy and doesn't follow me like he did when he first arrived. He loves his morning back rub/massage and I'm rewarded with snuggles and kisses and nudges for more. He's one drippy guy when it comes to drinking, but nothing a couple of towels can't manage."
